The Duke is a residential block located in one of historic Alexandria, one of Virginia’s most prestigious addresses in an area known as Old Town. The design solution is based on a pedestrian plaza with a one story garage below. The street is ringed with low-level Victorian style town-homes which create the urban streetscape while creating a garden/pedestrian plaza in the rear. The property sits on a brown-site reclaimed from a fueling operation known as “Fannon’s” which previously occupied the entire block. In addition, due to being located in a historic district, the design had to gain the approval of the community and be in compliance with the strict guidelines of the Board of Architectural Review.
